Caroline Taylor
A long-standing collaboration with soprano Caroline Taylor
Caroline Taylor is a soprano I first met while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music, and over the years we’ve built a creative and collaborative working relationship. From professional headshots in the studio to powerful production photography during her opera scenes, I’ve had the chance to document both her presence and performance. Caroline has called on me more than once as her go-to photographer — and it’s always a joy to create with her.
WHAT I CREATED
We began with a Portrait+ session in my home studio, where we created a mix of classic professional headshots and more expressive, creative portraits. One of my favourite moments from this session involved an embroidered parasol I happened to have on hand — the soft texture and filtered light made for some truly striking and artistic images, perfectly suited to Caroline’s lyrical presence.
Later, she invited me to photograph her performance in the RNCM Opera Scenes, specifically her role in Dialogues des Carmélites. The photos from that evening remain some of my personal favourites — dramatic lighting, powerful contrast, and moments of deep intensity. The chiaroscuro effect (or clair-obscur) in the RNCM Opera Theatre gave the scene a haunting stillness, and capturing it without disrupting the performance was a quiet challenge I thoroughly enjoyed.
Whether in portrait or performance, my approach with Caroline has always been about capturing her strength, artistry, and emotional depth — honestly, naturally, and with a bit of poetry in the frame.
