Jonathan Ainscough
A creative partnership with director Jonathan Ainscough
Jonathan Ainscough is an opera director and musician I’ve had the pleasure of working with on multiple occasions. Over the years, I’ve photographed several RNCM Opera Scenes he’s directed, and we also did a relaxed portrait session together to update his professional headshots. Jonathan has a great eye and strong artistic vision, and it’s always a privilege to document the work he brings to life on stage.
WHAT I CREATED
Our work together has spanned both portrait and performance photography. We started with a headshot session—simple, natural, and relaxed—focused on capturing images that felt professional but still true to Jonathan’s personality. Clean light, neutral tones, and a comfortable pace helped create a set of portraits that are versatile and quietly confident.
I’ve also been invited to photograph two RNCM Opera Scenes he directed: Pelléas et Mélisande and Don Giovanni. Both were rich with atmosphere and visual detail—two very different productions that each brought their own challenges and opportunities. I moved quietly during rehearsals and performances to document the mood, movement and direction at work, capturing expressive stills that Jonathan could use for portfolio, archive and future promotion.
Working together across multiple sessions has allowed us to build a creative shorthand—he knows how I work, and I understand what he’s looking for in an image. It’s that kind of trust that lets the photography stay both professional and instinctive.
