Gemma Ashcroft

Visual branding designed to drop the stuffy concert-hall act.

ABOUT Gemma

Gemma Ashcroft is a double bassist, string teacher, workshop leader and all-round musical powerhouse. She’s also a good friend, so when she asked for some updated portraits to reflect her colourful, hands-on work in education, I knew we’d have a brilliant time. Gemma wanted photos that felt professional but relaxed with personality, colour, and warmth. Nothing too formal. Nothing too ‘concert hall’.

WHAT I CREATED

I met Gemma at The Sharp Project in Manchester, a space full of colour and the perfect backdrop for someone who works with children and young people. She came totally prepared with three well-thought-out outfits, a clear vision of what she needed and a big smile. The session flowed so easily it felt much more like catching up than working. It’s always special when a shoot gives you space for real conversation, especially when you’re both juggling freelance life and family commitments.

I captured a mix of close-up portraits and wider shots featuring her double bass, keeping the posing entirely natural and relaxed. The final images feel joyful and grounded. A true reflection of Gemma’s personality and the kind of work she does. She now has a set of portraits she can use across her professional platforms, and a few extras in both colour and black & white for good measure.

foubography

I’m a photographer and Squarespace web designer based in Altrincham, South Manchester. I specialise in portrait, landscape and opera photography and also offer a “complete website package” where I can offer headshots, photos of your business and design your new website so you can manage it yourself afterwards.

Over the years I’ve built a portfolio career as a professional photographer, opera singer, wardrobe assistant and singing teacher. I have a MMus from the RNCM, a Bachelor in Theatre Sciences and Musicology from Ghent University and I’m a qualified teacher. When my son was born in 2021 I quickly realised that an opera career wasn’t as compatible with being a mum as much as I would like, so I decided to change my focus completely to photography and web design.

I prefer working with daylight in casual surroundings while having a chat making sure you’re at ease and relaxed. It’s the little moments in between that make the best shots!

Feel free to get in touch if you’d like to work with me!
