Calvers & Suvdal
WHAT Calvers & Suvdal NEEDED
When I was first starting out in photography and open to exploring different styles, Ian from Calvers & Suvdal got in touch. They were looking for a mix of clean product shots and lifestyle imagery of their furniture pieces at a studio they’d rented in Stockport. I was completely upfront with them about having very limited experience with product photography at the time, but they were incredibly laid-back and happy to let me run with it. Feeling a bit hesitant but eager for the challenge, I took the job.
WHAT I CREATED
When I arrived at the studio, I realised the shoot was a completely blank canvas. There wasn’t a strict styling brief or a set layout plan in place, which meant I had a wonderful opportunity to trust my creative instincts. I pulled directly from my background in interior design and architecture, rolling up my sleeves to build the scenes from scratch. I spent the day playing around with furniture arrangements, natural lighting and interesting colour combinations to give the images a distinct sense of style and structure.
While the standard catalogue product shots helped me realise that rigid commercial work wasn’t where my heart lay, creating those lifestyle setups was incredibly fulfilling. It was a fantastic learning curve that showed me how naturally my love for designed spaces could blend with my camera, nudging me gently toward the documentary-style brand photography I focus on today.
