James Creswell
ABOUT James Creswell
James Creswell is an exceptional operatic bass who sings with major international houses including the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Opera North, and English National Opera. After graduating from Yale and singing as a soloist with the Komische Oper Berlin, he got in touch ahead of an upcoming contract with San Francisco Opera to get his portfolio properly up to date with a full-day portrait session in Manchester.
WHAT James Needed
Singing at an international level means needing a versatile bank of images that work across programme bios, press features, and agency representation. Classical music portraits can turn stiff and clinical very quickly, so James wanted something modern and natural that completely steered clear of the bow-tie clichés common to the opera world.
Because James is represented by IMG, I needed to make sure the session delivered on their commercial brief as well as his personal style. Before the shoot, I contacted his agency team directly to clarify the exact formats, crops, and looks they needed for his international press kit. Having those specifications locked in beforehand meant we didn't waste any time guessing on the day.
WHAT I CREATED
I based the shoot at The Daylight Space in Stockport, which was ideal for keeping the atmosphere relaxed and unhurried. The studio’s massive windows flood the space with soft, natural light, letting me build clean, flattering setups without cluttering the room with intimidating flash gear or stands.
I structured the day far more like a coffee and a catch-up than a formal photoshoot. Giving someone the breathing space to settle into a room means you completely bypass those frozen, awkward expressions that happen when people feel watched. We worked through several outfit changes at an easy pace, capturing thoughtful, understated portraits for opera programmes alongside warmer, relaxed frames for press and digital features.
